Projects can be used to share media ownership and access between project members, and projects can also be used to publish assortments of media and specimens for access and discovery by the public. If you want to share media ownership and access with multiple users across multiple projects, consider creating a user team. Projects can be managed by teams, and users with access to that team also gain access to any projects managed by that team.

Display all details of Fossil leaves and fruits of Tetramelaceae (Curcurbitales) from the Eocene of the Rocky Mountain region, USA, and their biogeographic significance Premise of research. Eocene sediments of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming contain fossil leaves and infructescences that appear to represent Tetramelaceae (Cucurbitales). Today, this family consists of two genera (Tetrameles and Octomeles) of towering rainforest trees native to India through Southeast Asia and Australia. Methodology. We examined the fruit, seed, and leaf morphology of extant Tetramelaceae as a basis for recognizing fossil representatives. Fossils were studied from localities in the Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation in Utah and Colorado, and in the Bridger and Aycross Formations of western Wyoming. Extant and extinct material was studied by light microscopy and micro-CT scanning. Pivotal results. Parvaspicula lepidioidea (Cockerell) comb. nov. infructescences conform to Tetramelaceae in their spike-like inflorescences of helically arranged, capsular, ribbed, fruits with inferior ovaries and parietal placentation. Each fruit typically has four styles, and dehisces apically between the styles, reminiscent of extant Tetrameles, but they share an apical disk and the bulbous stigmas of extant Octomeles. Punctaphyllum glandulosum (Brown) comb. nov. leaves conform to Tetramelaceae in their long petioles, basal marginal and intramarginal veins, and regularly spaced circular laminar glands. These glands are small and cover the laminae, or are larger and concentrated in a single file row along the lamina margin. P. glandulosum varies in its base shape, lobe number, and margin type, matching the variation seen in extant Octomeles leaves. Conclusions. The repeated co-occurrence of Parvaspicula and Punctaphyllum, and morphological similarities of both these organs with extant Tetramelaceae, lead us to infer that they represent parts of the same extinct plant. These records serve as the first documented leaf and infructescence fossils of Tetramelaceae and suggest that the family once lived in North America, indicating broader biogeographic distribution than previously recognized. 0 0
Display all details of A new aardwolf-line fossil hyena from middle and late Miocene deposits of Eurasia The aardwolf Proteles cristatus is the only known hyaenid, living or extinct, to exhibit an extremely reduced dentition related to its termite-specializing diet. The fossil record of aardwolves is essentially nonexistent, rendering it difficult to place this unusual hyena in the broader evolutionary context of small-bodied hyaenid species in Eurasian Neogene deposits. Here we describe a new genus and species of a small-bodied hyaenid, Gansuyaena megalotis, representing the closest morphological link to aardwolves to date. This new fossil hyena is based on a skull with associated mandible, a rostrum preserving several teeth, and several referred specimens. The new specimens were discovered in Neogene deposits in Linxia Basin, Gansu Province, China. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that among early hyaenids, Gansuyaena megalotis is most closely related to the living aardwolf. Also recognized in Gansuyaena are the fossils previously referred to “Protictitherium” aff. gaillardia from Pasalar, Turkey, and “Plioviverrops” guerini is interpreted to represents a second Gansuyaena species. In addition to the living aardwolf, Proteles cristatus, our analyses suggest that the proteline lineage includes the extinct genera Gansuyaena, Mesoviverrops, and Plioviverrops. Although the precise timing and geographic location of evolutionary divergence between the aardwolf and Gansuyaena remain elusive, critical new morphological information provided by Gansuyaena specimens contradicts previous molecular phylogenetic analysis suggesting a hyaenine origin for Proteles. Instead, our analyses suggest the aardwolf lineage has a more ancient origin from small-bodied stem hyaenids prior to the appearance of large and robust bone-cracking hyaenines. 2 2

Display all details of UMMZ-oVert Project Abstract - The oVert (openVertebrate) Thematic Collection Network (TCN) will generate and serve high-resolution digital three-dimensional (3D) data for internal anatomy across vertebrate diversity. Via a network of digitization centers across the US, more than 20,000 fluid-preserved specimens representing over 80% of the living genera of vertebrates will be CT-scanned. This will provide broad coverage for exploration and research on all major groups of vertebrates. Contrast-enhanced scans will be generated that reveal soft tissues and organs. This collection of digital imagery and three-dimensional volumes will be open for exploration, download, and use to address questions related to the discovery of new species, documenting patterns of anatomical diversity and growth, and testing hypotheses of function and evolution. The resource will provide unprecedented global access to valuable specimens in US museum collections and will develop best practices and guidelines for high-throughput CT-scanning, including efficient workflows, preferred resolutions, and archival formats that optimize the variety of downstream applications. Museum specialists will be trained on the generation, curation, and distribution of 3D data, researchers in using 3D anatomical data, and high school and undergraduate students in the tools for creating 3D anatomical models. To drive the use of these digital specimens by K-12 STEM educators, teacher-driven workshops that generate freely available lesson plans focused on specific science standards that are based on digital and printed 3D models of specimens in US museum collections.
