Media are grouped by projects created by users. Projects tend to contain media tied together by a theme. A project might represent the dataset for a single peer-reviewed paper, the results of a collections digitization project, or data for a digital lesson plan.

Projects can be used to share media ownership and access between project members, and projects can also be used to publish assortments of media and specimens for access and discovery by the public. If you want to share media ownership and access with multiple users across multiple projects, consider creating a user team. Projects can be managed by teams, and users with access to that team also gain access to any projects managed by that team.

Display all details of U.W.110 Homo naledi is known from the Rising Star cave system, South Africa, where its remains have previously been reported from two localities: the Dinaledi Chamber (U.W. 101) and Lesedi Chamber (U.W. 102). Continued exploration of the cave system has expanded our knowledge of the Dinaledi Chamber and its surrounding passageways (the Dinaledi Subsystem), leading to the discovery of new fossil localities. This paper discusses the fossil assemblage from the locality designated U.W. 110. This locality is within a narrow fissure of the Dinaledi Subsystem approximately 12 meters southwest of the 2013–2014 excavation. Fossil remains recovered from this locality include six hominin teeth and 28 cranial fragments, all consistent with a single immature hominin individual. The dental morphology of the new specimens supports attribution to H. naledi. This is the first immature individual of H. naledi to preserve morphological details of the calvaria in association with dental evidence. This partial skull provides information about the maturation of H. naledi and will be important in reconstructing the developmental sequence of immature remains from other H. naledi occurrences. This is the third locality described with H. naledi material in the Rising Star cave system and represents a depositional situation that resembles the Lesedi Chamber in some respects. 13 13

The As Sahabi Hyaenictitherium represents the northernmost occurrence of H. namaquensis in Africa and one of the most informative evidence of this species known to date. 1 1

Display all details of Belenocarpa, Oligocene of Peru Premise of the Research. Three-dimensionally preserved fruits and seeds of “Jatropha” tertiara Berry from the early Oligocene of Peru have been reinvestigated based on type material supplemented by more recently collected specimens. Methodology. The fossils were recovered by fracturing the weakly consolidated sediment layer and extant and fossil fruits were examined with micro-CT tomography. Pivotal results. The fruits are thin-walled prolate trilocular capsules that are hexagonal in cross section with prominent loculicidal and septicidal keels. The seeds are ovate in dorsiventral view, lenticular in cross section, and fitted with a prominent, broad caruncle that is about half the length of the seed body. The large size and six-keeled aspect of the fruit distinguishes this fossil from extant species of Jatropha, and leads us to exclude it from the extant genus. We transfer it to the new genus Belenocarpa. Conclusions. Similarities to other genera, particularly with some species of Manihot, indicate likely affinities with the Crotonoid clade. The well-preserved, relatively large caruncles on these seeds, comprising about ⅓ of the full seed length, are comparable to those seen on extant seeds known to be dispersed by ants and suggest that similar insect-plant associations were already present in South America by the Oligocene. 14 6
Display all details of Cranial anatomy of Csakvaromys bredai (Rodentia, Sciuridae, Xerinae) We provide the first detailed description of the cranial anatomy of an early marmotine ground squirrel Csakvaromys (= Spermophilinus) bredai, based on a well-preserved facial skull and associated specimens from the early late Miocene (11.1–9.7 Ma) Grytsiv fauna in western Ukraine. Notable cranial features of C. bredai include a shallow, broad, and elongated facial skull with a straight dorsal profile, massive rostrum, deeply concave lateral lip of infraorbital foramen, shortened infraorbital canal, large lacrimal foramen, an elongated anteromedial edge of zygomatic arch extending onto the premaxilla; a broad and flat interorbital region with closed supraorbital foramina, and non-elevated supraorbital margins. Phylogenetic analysis of a 136 craniodental character matrix reconstructs Csakvaromys, together with Palaeosciurus, Protospermophilus, and Sciurotamias, within the subtribal clade Sciurotamiina. We provide the first reliable morphological synapomorphies for Xerinae, and suggest a revised definition for a monophyletic Sciurotamiina, which is supported by a large lacrimal foramen ventrally contributed by the maxilla, the facial tuberosity with a longitudinal crest for the superficial masseter, rudimentary ectopterygoid crest, and the presence of an expansive attachment area for the anterior fibers of the anterior deep masseter muscle. The craniofacial anatomy reveals that C. bredai was a frugivore with a predominantly hard-nut diet and arboreal or semi-arboreal habit.
