Short description
Complete retrodeformed model of the skull of Whatcheeria deltae
Full description
A model of the skull and jaws of the Viséan stem tetrapod Whatcheeria deltae. The individual bones in this model were segmented using Avizo 8.0 from three specimens; FM PR 1634, FM PR 1665 and FM PR 1814, then digitally manipulated to assemble this model. The model is largely based on the left side of FM PR 1634, the palate of FM PR 1814 and FM PR 1665, a complete left mandible. The right side of the cranium, palate and right lower jaw were mirrored to create the complete model.

Avizo 8.0
Description
Scans were processed using the 3D visualization software Avizo 8.0 (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, Massachusetts, U.S.A.). Density thresholding was used to distinguish boundaries between fossils and surrounding matrix, empty space and artificial infilling. Scans were then segmented slice-by-slice, interpolating across no more than 5 slices at a time, to separate individual bones. Individual bones were isolated and converted to 3D surface models that could be digitally manipulated. Our 3D reconstruction of Whatcheeria is largely based on bones segmented from the left side of FM PR 1634. The palate is taken from from the left side of FM PR 1814. The lower jaw was segmented from FM PR 1665, a complete left specimen, then mirrored to create the right jaw.
