Viracarpon, an enigmatic monocot from the Late Cretaceous Project ID: 00000C430 Public
12 Media · 1 Specimen · Managed by: Selena Smith

Reinvestigation of fossils fruits described as Viracarpon from the Late Cretaceous Deccan Intertrappean Beds of India, and Coahuilacarpon from the Late Cretaceous of Mexico, shows remarkable similarities between these taxa. We consider them congeneric and provide new combinations for several species. These specimens illustrate that there are still significant gaps in our understanding of the monocot fossil record that bear on understanding the biogeography and systematics of this group.
