The Book of Fortresses is a digital art and architectural history project that seeks to better understand a collection of perspective drawings and plans of castles and castle-towns on Portugal's border with Spain that were drawn by a Portuguese squire named Duarte de Armas in 1509-1510 CE. The data added to this repository includes high resolution photographs of the extant castles and towns taken from vantage points that are estimated to be as similar as possible to those used by Duaarte de Armas when he created his perspective drawings. The 3D data includes georeferenced point clouds and 3D meshes of a subset of the 55 border castles that Duarte de Armas rendered in the Book of Fortressses that were captured via drone photogrammetry during visits to the sites in 2018, 2019, and 2022.
